Did I forget anything? Have I packed everything I need? Will this be useful? Should I leave this behind? To help you navigate this period of questioning, we’ve created a small checklist for a less stressful experience.
Get Clear on Baggage Weight Limits First
Be sure to pay attention to your baggage allowance and limits, which vary between airlines. If your suitcase exceeds the limit, you’ll have to pay an additional fee. These fees vary by airline.
Let’s Talk Clothes
When traveling to America, bringing minimal clothes and items and maximizing shopping on the way back is the best approach. However, be sure to pack according to the weather of your destination. Also, if your employer has requested specific clothing items like black pants or shoes, be sure to include those.
Cosmetics and Basic Care Items
You might not have time for immediate shopping, so pack essentials like shampoo, a toothbrush, toothpaste, etc., to last you a short while. Don’t forget sunscreen, especially!
Medications
We recommend bringing your regular medications and emergency supplies. You may not find the same medications there, and getting them from a pharmacy might not be straightforward. Therefore, be sure to have painkillers, cold medicine, antibiotics, antacids, burn cream, throat lozenges, etc., with you.
Personal Items
Definitely bring a lightweight towel, bedsheet, and pillowcase. While these might be available there, if you prefer certain standards, bring your own.
Technology
Don’t forget that outlets might be different; therefore, bring at least one adapter. Also, remember that voltage might be lower. If electronics are cheap at your destination, it might be better to buy new ones there. Therefore, think carefully about what you really need to take.
Documents
We recommend making at least two copies of essential documents that you must carry, like your passport, DS2019 form, and SEVIS. Keep one copy in your suitcase and one in your carry-on bag; the originals should be with you. In case your suitcase is lost, these copies should be stored elsewhere. Also, considering the possibility of losing your suitcase, we recommend dividing your spending money accordingly.
Personalize Your Suitcase
You can get a luggage tag with your details. Writing your information on it will make it easier to identify and, if lost, easier for it to find its way back to you. Lastly, remember you’re going to America, where you can easily access anything you need. Avoid overpacking, as you’ll likely want to shop and fill your suitcase with new items. Creating a wishlist can be a great way to plan for the items you intend to buy 😊
