Under the Work and Travel Program, we can evaluate monthly living expenses under the subheadings of accommodation, transportation, food and beverages, and social life. It’s important to note that these expenses can vary depending on the individual and the state and city you are planning to go to. For example, while living in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York for 3-4 months may be amazing, the daily cost of living in such metropolitan areas can be slightly higher compared to other regions.
First, let’s talk about accommodation expenses. At Edumaster Yurt Dışı Eğitim, all our jobs come with accommodation options. When evaluating the job you’ll choose, you’ll find all the details regarding where you’ll stay, the weekly rent, whether you need to pay a deposit, the amount of the deposit, and how it should be paid. This ensures that students won’t encounter any issues related to accommodation. The location of the job within a state is one of the important factors determining the rent, of course. However, all our employers make an effort to keep the rent at a minimum. We even have jobs where accommodation is provided for free! The weekly average accommodation fees range from $70 to $150.
Employers in the Work and Travel program also aim to provide accommodations close to the workplace, minimizing transportation costs. This helps reduce your transportation expenses. Many students buy bicycles for transportation, which is quite a popular mode of transportation. If you see someone riding a bike at a young age, you can be sure they are a Work and Travel participant 😊
In addition to bicycles, you can also use public transportation, which will vary depending on the state and city. For example, in Virginia, you might pay $1 for a single ride, while in Maryland Ocean City, you can get an unlimited all-day pass for $4.
Food and beverages are one of the major expenses for Work and Travel students, but your expenses in this regard may vary depending on the type of job and the establishment. Particularly in restaurants, resorts, or hotels, our participants can often enjoy free or discounted meals.
Since accommodation usually includes a kitchen, you can also shop at the market and cook your meals at home. Due to the higher purchasing power, you can enjoy meat, chicken, and fish at quite reasonable prices every day. You can consider your average weekly grocery expenses to be around $60-70. If you prefer eating out all the time, this amount can go up to $150-170.
In the Work and Travel Program, we strongly recommend that you keep your social life active, participate in various activities and events as much as possible, and explore the city you are in during your working period. Focusing only on work and isolating yourself from social life can make the program become tiring and boring in a short time. The experiences and friendships you gain in your social life can turn into long-lasting friendships and allow you to make friends in many different countries around the world.
Often, employers organize activities, and there will also be free activities and festivals in your city. Your social life expenses may vary depending on alcohol and cigarette use, but on average, it will be around $100-150 per week.
Considering that the jobs we offer at Edumaster have an average hourly wage of $15-18 and provide the opportunity to work a minimum of 35-40 hours per week, covering the living expenses mentioned above is quite easy!
