One of the most popular and fun jobs in the Work and Travel program is undoubtedly lifeguard. When lifeguard is mentioned, it may come to mind working on the big beaches by the ocean that we see in the movies. Work and Travel students cannot work here. So where can you work as a Lifeguard? Lifeguards can work in amusement water parks and swimming pools. While a certificate is usually required for swimming pools, this certificate may not be required for amusement and water parks. In addition, some employers want students to receive the certificate in courses held in Turkey and participate in the program in this way.
Some employers, usually in amusement and water parks, measure the swimming skills of the students for 1 week under the name of training when students go to America. And they give the certificate on the spot. You can access all these details from the employment contract before you go to America.
So, what does a Lifeguard do?
Lifeguard's primary duty is to watch the pool with full concentration, even if there is only 1 person in the pool. He should stay away from actions that will distract concentration, such as talking to a guest or a lifeguard friend while on duty and playing on the phone.
You should always go to the pool early and make sure that the pool and its surroundings are clean and make the necessary preparations.
You can also be held responsible for cleaning the tables and garbage if there is any. For example, you can stay for half an hour after the pool is closed and be held responsible for small tasks such as sweeping the floor, taking out the garbage, arranging and cleaning the tables. You may ask yourself why I am Lifeguard, but it is useful to remember that the clock is ticking, and you are making money.
You may need to check the pool's PH and chlorine values. Chemicals used to control pH and chlorine are dropped into the water and noted on the hourly chart.
You are given training on these before you start working in the USA. What could be better than being the boss of your own business and determining the rules in the pool?
