Students who will participate in the Work and Travel program will encounter many new terms and words. It is very important for them to know their meanings and usage areas when we think that they have to use these words and terms constantly during the process and in America. These mentioned words are as follows:
J1: The name given to the type of visa that students participating in the Work and Travel program receive. In addition, you may encounter that Work and Travel participants are directly referred to as J1 while in America.
Job Offer: It is the “job offer” that includes the terms and responsibilities of the job, which is sent by the sponsor after the participant enters the job interview and gets approval. The participant accepts the terms if he signs it.
I-94 Form: It is the form that the participant must fill in immediately after entering America, which officially informs that he has entered the country. It can be filled in from the website or airport kiosks.
Training: It is the training given to the participant about the job position and responsibilities when he starts working in the USA. While it lasts 3-4 days in some jobs, it can take up to 1-2 weeks in some positions. The participant continues to receive his full salary during this period.
Overtime: It is the payment that the participant will receive if he exceeds 40 hours per week. The participant is paid 1.5 times the hourly rate agreed for each hour.
Tip: It is the name given to the tip that the participant receives in different positions such as server, busser, food runner, housekeeping. The tip rate may vary depending on the position and the performance of the participant.
Supervisor: It is the name given to the employee who has previous work experience, who adjusts the working hours and some responsibilities of the participant in the position he works.
Shift: It is the name given to working hours.
Break: They are the breaks that the participant will take during the hours he works. While there are short and frequent breaks in some positions, there may be a longer single break in some positions.
Clock-in, clock out: It is the entry and exit of the participant to the system with the number given to him at the beginning and end of the work every day.
SSN: It is the social security number, a card that the participant must keep throughout the process and after returning from the USA.
DS2019: It is a form given to the participants who will participate in the exchange program to America, which contains the SEVIS number.
SEVIS: It is the name given to the system where the participant’s information is recorded by the USA as soon as he participates in the program.
