One of the most curious subjects of our Work and Travel participants is tax refund.
In the USA, the laws and rules of each state are different from each other, so the tax systems also differ within themselves. Even if you are not an American citizen, you will be taxed on two of the four different tax types in the Work and Travel process in the United States. To briefly talk about these tax types; Federal Tax, State Tax, Federal Income Tax and Social Security Tax respectively. Let’s talk briefly about the tax types that you are not exempt from.
Federal income tax is a tax that is standard in every state, regardless of state. Typically 10-15% will be deducted from your paycheck. State income tax differs from state to state, usually with a 5%-8% deduction.
When Work and Travel students successfully complete the program, they are entitled to a refund of some of the tax they paid. The tax refund you can get back at the end of the program is inversely proportional to your earnings. So the more you earn, the less tax refund you get
We would also like to point out that, as in European countries, unfortunately, you cannot get back the tax you paid for your electronic shopping in the USA.
You can start your tax refund process within a month or two after returning from the United States.
Let’s briefly talk about what is required in the tax refund process.
In order to receive a tax refund after successfully completing the program, your passport’s identity page, visa page, your entry and exit date to the United States, your last paycheck or W2 form, your DS 2019 form and your SSN number are required.
